Thoughts of the Day

So its so hot and muggy I can feel the sweat dripping down my chest. The birds outside, chirping and as chipper as usual, don't suffer the same problems, but have their own. The house smells like rotting garbage, and I'm not going to be the one to remind people of their responsibilities this time. I'm not the responsible one, after all.

I think I can reduce the cool by sitting in front of my window unit and letting the cold air hit my face. I wouldn't mind a beer, or three, I wouldn't mind a tall glass of shut up and just go with what I'm told. I wouldn't mind changing some of my behavior, or increasing my lack of interest in things that really could help me in the long run. I want to clean my room but I figure, "what's the point?"

Some might wonder if this is what depression looks like, but I'm not depressed. There's too much in my head, too many thoughts that make me feel like there is no time for down emotions or self-pity. Because that's what depression is, right?

Maybe its because I had San Francisco in my arms for a week and now I've gone cold turkey. Maybe I just miss my friends.

I think, though, it probably is that I'm going to be done with school in five weeks, and I still am not worried about my future - only what I'm going to do about the decisions of my past. Maybe finding the solutions to those problems is exactly what will define my future. Maybe I shouldn't wonder anymore. Read more!

John Donne - The Flea

This is an awesome poem by John Donne. Check it out, tell me what you think.

---

THE FLEA.
by John Donne

MARK but this flea, and mark in this,
How little that which thou deniest me is ;
It suck'd me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be.
Thou know'st that this cannot be said
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead ;
Yet this enjoys before it woo,
And pamper'd swells with one blood made of two ;
And this, alas ! is more than we would do.

O stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost, yea, more than married are.
This flea is you and I, and this
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is.
Though parents grudge, and you, we're met,
And cloister'd in these living walls of jet.
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Let not to that self-murder added be,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence?
Wherein could this flea guilty be,
Except in that drop which it suck'd from thee?
Yet thou triumph'st, and say'st that thou
Find'st not thyself nor me the weaker now.
'Tis true ; then learn how false fears be ;
Just so much honour, when thou yield'st to me,
Will waste, as this flea's death took life from thee. Read more!

Charm School 3 Update: Episode 3

Photobucket Photobucket

Wait, maybe someone should have told So Hood and Farrah that this was NOT Daisy of Love - two people quitting in one episode?? What the French? So Hood and Farrah both willingly turned in their pledge pins, the former because she did not want to get eliminated before someone who deserved it more, which, ironically, happens in this episode. Farrah left shortly thereafter because she felt like the show was too stressful to make the necessary changes, duly noting that she's make 100 grand in a year and shove it all in their faces.

Um, what? That has to be the whackest logic, er, ever.

The show must go on, so to speak, and we see Ricki pull all the girls aside in a fashion that eerily reeks of her talk show of the 90s. With the girls all airing their baggage, the race thing comes up, with all black girls feeling like Kiki was eliminated because of the color of her skin rather than the content of her character.

Um, what? I rescind my previous statement and inject it here. Farrah, you're off the hook. Kiki, you're a bonafied psycho.

With Ricki satisfied that they've talked it out and squashed it, the challenge deals with old people and getting along with others who are not like you. Bay Bay Bay wins the challenge, while Natasha convinces the rest of the girls to vote Brittaney, Brittanya and Bubbles (the B-bitches, sans BBBay) onto the carpet. After kicking all the girls in the camel toe ("I have a good reason to expel each of you"), Ricki decides to eliminate no one, thus making Natasha's efforts worthless. Daisy should take a lesson from Ricki!

Nine left!

San Francisco Recap

So, telling you all about San Francisco would get boring and tedious in just words (I know myself too well), so I picked out the top twelve images that pretty much encompass the wonderful awesomeness that was my semi-annual return home to California. So, without further adieu, we begin...

1. Coming into the City
Photobucket

I got into San Francisco late on Wednesday night, so my first real day was Thursday. Melissa told me she'd meet me at the Ferry Building, which sits on the waterfront at Pier 1 on the Embarcadero. It used to be a train depot, but now serves as a marketplace for bougie yet wonderful sustainable foods and products. The original goal was to eat there, but it didn't end up happening because the place we wanted to go wasn't serving food anymore. We decided to find something else. This photo was taken en route to the Ferry Building.

2. Dim Sum at Yank Sing
Photobucket

Yank Sing is my favorite Dim Sum restaurant in San Francisco, mostly because I have generated so many good memories there over the course of the years. After my graduation from middle school, we went there to celebrate, and although it is a bit pricey and they don't serve alcohol, it was still fun to go and enjoy Melissa's company. We got high on tea and pork buns. It was truly a wonderful meal that doubled as a homecoming gift of sorts ... and a tasty one at that!

3. Margaritas in the Mission
Photobucket

I used to hang out in the Mission district a lot, recognized for its large Mexican population, and, noticeably, an increasing rise in hipsters and young professionals. Its slowly gentrifying, and so it currently holds a strange yet exciting feeling of worlds merging and melding together. Because I'm a firm believer in the phrase, "when in Rome," we got a couple of pitchers or margaritas, which Amar helped us drink when he got there. They also had strawberry flavor, which was a definite plus.

4. Champagne in Dolores Park
Photobucket

My favorite place in San Francisco, easily, is Dolores Park. Nowhere else in the city can you get an amazing city view, one dollar paletas of any flavor, a front row seat to witness hipster and gay culture, or more beautiful weather. Because I was in such a great mood that day, I bought a bottle of champagne and Amar, Melissa and I shared it in Dolores Park as the sun set. You can't get any more San Franciscan than that.

5. Popscene with the Girls
Photobucket

I met up with Sophia later that night and the two of us decided that we would go to Popscene, one of our old hangouts when we were still under drinking age. Its an 18+ club so we never were illegally there, and they are one of the few clubs in the city that tears up awesome 80s and contemporary New Wave and indie pop so that city kids can dance. We met up at her place, and went to a liquor store in the Castro, then met up with Melly G at the Mix. After a couple of drinks there, we all decided to head over to Popscene, where we had way too much fun. For the first time in years, I became designated driver.

6. Preparing for the Party
Photobucket

The following day, I met up with Melissa and her dad to make arrangements for her graduation party. We went to Beverages and More to get her friends who were getting married a bottle of whiskey, and also some champagne for us. We ended up getting two awesome bottles of champagne, which we only ever drank one of. This photo is from the checkout line at BevMo, in which we noticed that Metro water came out with a chocolate mint flavored disaster that looked just awful. Yikes.

7. Lunch at Delfina Pizzeria
Photobucket

Holy, crap, yo, I love me some Delfina pizzeria. Situated around the corner from Dolores Park, on the intersection of Gay and Hipster, this small restaurant seats maybe forty people at a time, and always has a wait. However, the wait is worth it, and although we initially wanted patio seating, our table ended up being on the inside of an open window, which was all good with us. This photograph is of our delicious lunch, sans the tasty tri-colored salad we had to start. With a bottle of wine and a cheeseless pizza, we couldn't be happier. Or drunker!

8. The Graduation Party
Photobucket

Melissa, being the rockstar that she is, booked an entire gallery/bar space for the night with a co-worker for her graduation party. After I dropped her off early, I took off to meet up with Angela at Van Ness and Market. We stopped at Chevy's on the way back to the party to grab a couple of ultimate margaritas and some nachos. The photo is of Melissa and Angela dancing, which was the image I want to remember forever of this night. Melissa was totally on cloud 9, the music was bangin' (they played "Kids" by MGMT which I love), and the drinks were good. I won't mention the fist fight I got into afterwards. These are supposed to be happy thoughts!

9. The Graduation
Photobucket

The following night was the graduation. I sat with Melissa's family (her dad, uncles, aunts, and cousins) to witness her receive the degree she'd been working towards for the past five years of her life. It truly was an awesome moment. Her dad was infinitely proud of her, as exemplified by the photograph above. Unfortunately, shortly after this moment, I had to cut out to meet up with my own father, to make the three-hour journey down to Fresno for...

10. The Gangsback Reunion
Photobucket

In the mid-80s, my dad was part of a popular group called Gangsback, a band that wrote original pieces but also covered popular hits of the time for people to dance to at clubs. In Fresno, CA, there was a reunion of sorts, twenty-seven years after the initial band had been created. Although, at different points of the band's incarnation, my dad had played keyboards, drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, lead vocals, among others, he played the bass and sung that evening. Once again, I was designated driver, as my dad truly let his hair down and was taking tequila shots at one in the morning. Now I know where i get it from!

11. If You've Never Been To Fresno...
Photobucket

...then this photo should certainly sum it up for you! I don't think much else needs to be said.

12. Jaunt to the Russian River
Photobucket

It was nice to get out of the city once, and so Melissa, Sophia and I decided to do it again on Monday, the last full day I was in San Francisco. Guerneville, CA is only one hour north of the city by the bay, and so the three of us went up there, got a ton of food at Safeway, and proceeded to pig out and swim all day long. It will forever be one of my favorite memories ever, because it was so peaceful, and the company so great.

---

Although there are a ton of other awesome memories I made while out in San Francisco (Nopalito with dad, oysters and champagne with Melissa), these are the ones that were captured in photographs. I hope you enjoyed, and now understand why I couldn't update as much as i usually do on my trip! Love yous! Read more!

Charm School 3 Update: Episode 2

Photobucket

Jeez, when a pilot is good, what follows in the next episode rarely outshines the first episode - however, that is dispelled with the second episode of "Charm School with Ricki Lake." Holy shit!

The episode deals with being model citizens, but the girls are hardly up the challenge - Ashley does not want to give up hairspray or aerosol, Kiki, So Hood and Bay Bay Bay don't want to get out of poor Bubbles' face, and Brittaney wants to campaign to be the biggest weirdo in celebreality history.

In the end, however, Kiki gets the boot for being an instigator who is driving the girls apart along race and show lines - meaning, the Real Chance of Love girls versus the Rock of Love girls. The episode ends on kind of a cliffhanger note, and we'll have to wait for next week to figure out what's going on with So Hood, who looks ready to leave....

Stripper Update

Headache central. Although finals are [almost] over, my stress level has not gone down one bit. My final test will probably be one of my hardest (next to that skanky Asian-American film class that I took), and I'm just ready to put it all behind me. This semester blew more than Natasha in that porno flick. Between getting a new roommate (Kevin's moving out) and getting ready for San Francisco, I feel like I'm totally unprepared for everything.

I can't stress about everything, though. Things are kind of lame-ass right now, but they won't always be, right? I have so much to look forward to - so many good things approaching. And between that blueberry bagel and the organic yogurt I just ate, I had this glorious thought of sitting in Dolores Park with my BFFs in San Francisco, drinking beer and listening to music.

Last week when Nati was off to San Francisco, I told her we should just go and never come back. I think she knew I was joking, and wishes I wasn't. But I'm not sure if I was joking entirely. Read more!

Charm School 3: Episode 1

Photobucket Photobucket

What the French, toast?! A new season of Charm School is in session, this time with Ricki Lake as headmistress, and girls from both Rock of Love Bus and Real Chance of Love. AM-azing! Ridiculously good.

Hair pulling? Name calling? Cartoon voices? Trannies? Stripper heels? Charity? Not one, but two (count 'em, two!) beaver shots? A "what the French?!"?! The Blondetourage "handshake"? Double elimination? This episode couldn't get any better! With two dead-weight deans (I'm sorry, but hosting TRL OR Loveline does not make you qualified to be a dean), Ricki is going to have her ass handed to her! I can't wait to see it happen!

Oh, Beverly was eliminated for grabbing, and allegedly "punching" Brittaney Star's head, yanking out some of her weave, to which Brittaney responds [regarding her hair], "Like, it's my favorite thing about me!" This was one of the biggest WTF moments to me, because her hair is friggin' awful - but it figures that nothing else on her body does it for. Those booby implants are no longer paying for themselves, are they?

Gia was eliminated at the REAL expulsion ceremony a-la Courtney - AKA, for getting too wasted on the first day of Charm School. You know, if they keep sending girls home for getting drunk, they maybe should remove the pool-side bar from the house. Just sayin'. Its kind of like giving a manic depressive a gun and telling them to cheer up.

Anyway, twelve girls remain, but the way they all hate each other, I'm guessing its going to be a short season.

DC to SF

Another year anniversary in DC is about to come up, putting the total count to two - the amount of time I signed on for here on the east coast, but now, it seems like the end is nowhere in sight. What happened? Where did all the time go? Where did the thrill of moving somewhere new dissipate to? Last year, to celebrate the occasion, I wrote an article about the similarities and differences of DC, in terms of food, culture and opportunity. This year, I won't be so ambitious.

In DC, depending on the time of year, dozens of different animals can be smashed on the sidewalk or road - from roaches, to rats, to squirrels and possums. I've seen it all.

In San Francisco, those animals take over the cars. In San Francisco, people and bicyclists create road kill out of vehicles.

In DC, everyone smokes. People take long drags on cigarettes and spit the smoke in your face.

In San Francisco, they blow kisses. And its illegal to smoke everywhere, even in your own car.

In DC, rain does not guarantee cool weather or warm weather, thunder or sleet. In DC, at any moment, any time of the year, the sky can suddenly darken with clouds and fill the streets with streams in the gutters.

In San Francisco, a rainy day is always cold. A rainy day always hangs around, stagnant like the fog it burns behind.

In DC, I've never loved my life, my friends, working a brunch shift more than at any time I did in San Francisco. I always have loved my life, my friends, and everything I do back when I was a Californian, and maybe its all just maturity, but things are so great here.

In San Francisco, everything lies in the past. In DC, everything is present, but not future, not for long. I'm caught in the middle, I don't know where I'm going, but I won't fight the current, and I won't worry about where it leads. Lets just go and see where we wind up, okay? Read more!

Stripper Update

"Moderation. Everything in moderation."

This is something my dad always said, and something that I find myself coming back to almost every day of my life. I'm a man who loves to obsess, to indulge, and I always have to reflect on childhood lessons to ensure that I don't fall into holes. I think that out of all the lessons my dad taught me, I use this one the most. I think its so incredibly important to live a balanced, "whole" life, if that makes sense. When you give in to one thing, it consumes you.

Another one I've found myself always quoting is "everything happens for a reason," which, according to "Sex and the City," is something that only desperate women in their thirties say. However, my dad is in his fifties, and his wisdom has to have some value, right? I think I last used this one a few days ago to my sister when we were having dinner and drinks at the Heights. We have no control over the course our lives take, but what should happen, will happen. It makes a lot of sense to me, and even if we can't understand why shit goes down, it always goes down the way it SHOULD go down, whether we like it or not.

The third lesson that I use frequently that my dad always taught me when I was growing up was to show initiative. Don't wait for things to be done, just do them. People really appreciate when you do things without having to be told, and although I'm not the best at this just yet, its something that I always aspire to.

Anyway, don't know where this came from. I had a long phone conversation with my dad last night and I guess I really miss him. Can't wait - San Francisco in 12 days! Read more!
